Frequently asked questions

How does the app work?
Music Ear Trainer plays short musical examples and asks you to name what you hear. You start by telling major from minor in single chords, then in chord progressions and piano progressions. Later levels add harder listening (inversions and broken chords), timed speed rounds, and naming the exact key, with a reference tone first so you have something to compare against. The Sound Lab lets you pick a note and compare its major and minor chords side by side on different instruments. Practice tracks your streak and XP as you improve.
Is it on iPhone and the web?
Yes. Music Ear Trainer runs in your browser at keytrainer.matthew.systems and as an iPhone app. Progress is kept separately on each device.
Do I need an account?
No. There are no accounts and no sign-in. Your progress is stored privately on your own device.
Where is my progress saved? Can I move it to another device?
Progress lives only on the device you use: in your browser's storage on the web, and in on-device storage in the iPhone app. It is not synced across devices.
How do I reset or delete my data?
On the web, clear the site data for keytrainer.matthew.systems in your browser's settings. On iPhone, delete the app. Either one removes your progress and settings from that device.
There's no sound. What should I check?
Turn the volume up and make sure your device isn't muted, then tap the play button (some browsers won't play sound until you tap). Instrument sounds are downloaded when you use them (every instrument on the web; every instrument except piano in the iPhone app), so you need an internet connection for those. If a sound doesn't load, check your connection and try again.
How do you handle my data?
Minimally: no ads, no accounts, no tracking. The website keeps cookie-free page counts by page category (never your answers, scores or progress); the iPhone app has no analytics. Crash reports help fix bugs (not linked to you, and IP addresses aren't stored), and instrument sounds are downloaded when needed. See the privacy policy for the full details.
I found a bug or have a feature idea.
Please email it in. Bug reports and suggestions are genuinely welcome and help shape the app.
